A Year to a Better You - Getting Into The Word

Jan 2 / Van Moody

Happy New Year! This year, we are joining together to discover A Year to a Better You. We’ll go week by week as we work toward being our best selves. If you want to take a deeper dive with us, there’s still time to pick up your year-long devotional and the companion S.O.A.P. Journal. Let’s get started!

Whether you are a new believer or a seasoned one, expanding your knowledge of God’s Word and growing your relationship with Him is best done by spending time daily in His Word. The Bible is filled to overflowing with God’s promises and messages of hope, love, wisdom, and knowledge. More importantly, as we study God’s Word, we get to know Him better and grow our relationship with Him.

This year as we journey through A Year to a Better You, we’ll be using the S.O.A.P. Devotional method to study and dig deeper into the Word of God. For those who aren’t familiar with S.O.A.P., it is an acronym -  Scripture, Observation, Application, and Prayer, and it only requires a Bible, a time, a place, and in this instance, a copy of this study.

As we begin this year of transformation into our best selves, let’s begin by reading Joshua 1. To S.O.A.P. the passage, we’ll follow these steps:

  1. Scripture – Write out the verse which catches your attention.
  2. Observation – Note the context of the passage or verse.
  3. Application – Consider what God is saying to you.
  4. Prayer – Pray God’s Word back to Him, affirming His truths.

Take your time as you focus on the goal to learn more about God and how you can grow your relationship with Him. Look for what God is doing in the passage, what He is teaching, and what verse speaks to you. Remember, God’s Word is always personal, distinct to you.

In Joshua 1:7-8, we read, “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it.” It sounds like the perfect way to start our journey of A Year to a Better You.
