Last week, we saw
God’s plan more clearly – He wanted His people free so they could have a divine
encounter with Him. When they finally reached Sinai, Moses went up the mountain
to meet God. After their meeting, Moses returned to the people and repeated
God’s Words to them, “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and
how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself” (Exodus
19:4). It is a powerful image used by Moses again in Deuteronomy 32:10-12 but
also multiple times in the Scriptures, symbolizing God’s care, protection, and
strength.
Moses tells the parents in Exodus 19, and their children in Exodus 32, the way in which an eagle matures her young is the way God also wants to mature them. The same is true for us - He wants to mature us by walking us through a similar process. At a particular stage of development, the parent eagles break up the comfortable nest, forcing the eaglets to fly. While the young birds may not want to leave the comfort and security of the nest, they will never fulfill their purpose and learn to fly if they don’t. The adults stay nearby and if the eaglets fail to spread their wings, their parents carry them on their strong wings until the young ones learn to fly.
Within this symbolism, we see three ways God similarly moves us from infancy to maturity. First, God delivers us from… (the eaglets being pushed from the nest). Second, God delivers us in… (the eaglets becoming comfortable in the air). And last, God delivers us to… (the eaglets begin to fly and fulfill their purpose). For the Israelites, God delivered them from Egypt (their nest) because He had something better for them. Even so, it demanded that they spread their wings and mature.
God wants us to trust Him as He delivers us from our Egypt, because He has something better for us and He also has more for us to do! As we mature in Him, our lives become open doors leading to more opportunities to trust Him. If we refuse, our lives become iron bars which limit us. Like the Israelites we grumble and seek to return to the nest, while God is trying to teach us to fly. May we seek the opportunities God provides, learn to fly, and eventually soar.
