Holy Sabbath

May 23 / Van Moody
We’ve learned God promised to meet their needs, God provided miraculously, and now we see God lay out His plan. In Exodus 16:21-27, we read, “Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away. On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much—two omers for each person—and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses. He said to them, “This is what the Lord commanded: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to the Lord. So, bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.’” So, they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. “Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find any of it on the ground today. Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.” Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none.”

Monday through Friday – the Israelites were to gather manna for that day, no more. On the sixth day, they were to gather enough for two days as the 7th day would be a Sabbath day of rest. The word Sabbath means “rest” and we observe the Sabbath when se set aside one day of the seven days of the week to rest, refuel, and reconnect with God. We live in a culture where the lack of sleep and the rest it brings are causing all sorts of issues – physical, mental, and emotional – yet the Sabbath is serious business for God and a big part of His plan.

In Exodus 20, we see Sabbath among the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:8-11). In fact, as the 4th commandment, it is the longest and it deals with rest. God has more to say about Sabbath rest than He does about murder, theft, and adultery. Sabbath keeping requires faith. Sabbath is part of God’s plan for us, and we cannot honor the Sabbath without trusting God. Our thoughts are likely racing at this idea: “Are you kidding? We can’t just shut down for a whole day every week. There is too much to do. People are depending on us. Surely if we do everything will fall to pieces!”

Observing the Sabbath is much like tithing, we cannot afford not to do it! Tithing blesses our supernatural finances. Observing the Sabbath by unplugging and resting for a day means God’s supernatural blessing will be on our remaining six days. The Sabbath gives God the opportunity to provide for us supernaturally. We shouldn’t expect God’s supernatural help if we are working seven days a week. Let us observe the Sabbath (God’s plan for us) and discover the miraculous help, provision, favor, and increase He has for us!
