Last time, we learned
God promises to meet our needs, we simply have to trust Him. In Exodus 16:11-20,
we see another reason we can trust God to meet our needs. In this passage, God
has heard the grumbling from the Israelites and tells Moses that He will
provide meat in the evening and bread in the morning so they will know He is
the Lord. That night, God moved miraculously, causing so much quail to fly into
the camp that the ground was covered. NOTE: Quail don’t live in the desert but
that is what the Israelites craved so that is what God provided. That is how
committed God is to providing for His people. He can rearrange people, places
and things to get a blessing to His people and provide for their needs. They
were in the middle of nowhere and God prepared a table for them to eat well.
God can bless us wherever we are!
That night they ate quail and in the morning they awoke to find manna, the bread of heaven, on the ground waiting for them. (Manna is the Hebrew for “what is this?”) It was a thin wafer which tasted sweet and for the next 40 years they ate it, and it sustained, nourished, and satisfied them.
The manna in Exodus is an Old Testament picture of Jesus as we see in John 6:25-35, “When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, ‘Rabbi, when did you get here?’ Jesus answered, ‘Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.’ Then they asked him, ‘What must we do to do the works God requires?’ Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.’ So they asked him, ‘What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ ‘Sir,’ they said, “always give us this bread.’ Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’” Just as the manna sustained them for their journey, Jesus does the same for us during our journey here on earth.
The problem is we look for nourishment, fulfillment, and satisfaction in all the wrong places knowing no one and nothing can satisfy, nourish, and sustain us like Jesus! May we get up daily and feast on Jesus by spending time with Him in His Word.
