Why Pray?

Prayer connects us to God. When we pray, it is not so that we can get what we want from God. Rather, prayer is a way to align our hearts with His. It is our way of acknowledging Him as Lord and inviting God into our presence. Prayer helps us find comfort and reassurance, knowing that He hears and cares for us. Prayer also provides an opportunity for us to praise God for who He is (see https://www.lwf.org/names-of-god#names) and express gratitude for the blessings we receive. The more time we spend with Him in prayer, the more we will begin to experience Him as a loving Father.

Scriptures Supporting Why We Should Pray

“My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’” (Psalms 27:8) “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)“And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” (1 John 5:14)“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)

WHEN SHOULD WE PRAY?

While it is important that we set aside particular times in our day for prayer, such as praying first thing in the morning or using a midday break as a moment for prayer, 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NIV) tells us to “pray continually.” Each day, we should be engaged in an ongoing conversation with God. This enables us to receive His guidance and follow His lead. TWC offers many opportunities for us to come together for prayer.
